First off, if you are a serious fan of Pre-Hiatus (1974) Grateful Dead, then you absolutely! Need to hear this release – a complete no brainer – and, if you collect ” only the best ” in G. I hope you already have it, as it is without question one of the most difficult ” Bonus Discs ” to acquire of all-time… And it is definitely beyond evasive. Most likely because it’s just that good, and also I suppose because it was released close to a Decade & a Half Ago! (in 2004) – and most Dead Fans are likely completely-reluctant to let this one go from their cherished music collections. Just think this >>>’72 Veneta, Oregon! Basically (without’ totally’ spoiling the soup for you), this March’72 release from the Academy of Music in New York City offers 6-Tracks Playing In The Band – Sugar Magnolia > Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) > Jam > Uncle John’s Band & Dark Star! , and the Band comes straight out of the gate swinging & way-ready to Rock! The Playing In The Band is the 1st selection, and it is pretty much the victim though… Victim, in a Grate-way! Of a no-holds-barred Jerry Garcia electric-assault with some of the meanest Colorsound Wah live action that you can imagine! And yes, I know – you can’ imagine’ quite a bit! As so can I. But no-kidding at all here, as it is right about here that Phil starts to pound away at high-volume rhythm perfection, and the drum-stick action begins to be spot on! At this point you are like yep… They are in ” The Zone “!!! This Sugar Mag is rip-roaring and I won’t even say when, in an effort to not spoil it for you – but a little later on this disc, Garcia toys-around with what I think we could’ almost’ consider a near Sugar Mag’ re-entry’ – though it gets called off in a subtle fashion by some deeper & spacier jamming. Simply some must-hear live G. On this moment of Magic! Then, Pigpen straight-out muscles this’ Caution’, and as we well-know – this was some of his last ” Best ” on U. Soil – though, in Europe he did still manage to bring the very best he could. The’ Jam’ on here is played with integrated passion & power – and, heads beautifully! Into Uncle John’s Band before finishing up with a mesmerizing Dark Star!!! I mean how can one really go wrong with this 6-track 73+ minute’72 G. For a little bit of my personal-take on this amazing 1974-75 Legion of Mary band, in addition to some vital details on the ” Absolute Mary ” Bonus Disc CD – which is an Essential! Rare-Treasure for any Jerry Garcia Fan… Legion of Mary, what a fantastic band during it’s way too short-lived mid-70’s time! This project was rooted not only in Jerry Garcia’s love for music, and increasing desire to focus on additional solo (non-Grateful Dead) projects – but probably even more importantly, his close friendship & musical brotherhood with talented keyboardist Merl Saunders. Project blossomed during an interesting era for Garcia, as the Grateful Dead had just played their potentially final ” Farewell Shows ” in October of 1974. As a result, Jerry’s addiction to playing music, and playing it live resulted in immediately staffing up a great solo-project band. From an electric-music standpoint, if the Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Band beginning in 1972 was technically the 1st form of the ” Jerry Garcia Band “, then this 5-man Quintet was certainly the 2nd. It would in fact be the inaugural (non-Grateful Dead) electric Quintet that Jerry Garcia had staffed-up. Outside of this’74-’75 Legion of Mary band, and the ” Reconstruction ” project in’79 to follow – Garcia was always the clear-cut leader of the band (especially in the ” Jerry Garcia Band ” from 1976-95). But, what you have here is Jerry being more a ” part ” of a great well-rounded band – and power that structure allows, truly results in the Amazing! The songs that they deliver are both originals, in addition to multiple historic cover song versions that stand on their own regardless of who is playing them. It is however their unique and almost uncanny ability to make this material their’own’ – purely due to their sheer respect, passion, and fondness for playing it live to others in the audience who love hearing it just the same. You get hints of Dylan – Chuck Berry – Stevie Wonder – Lightnin’ Hopkins – Smokey Robinson – Hank Ballard – Jimmy Cliff – The Band, you name it – and this brilliant unit could even impress those who wrote these songs, with their thoughtful & inspiring deliveries. It is indeed safe to say that this Legion of Mary era was indeed short, but sweet. And, as for this Quintessential! Jerry Garcia ” Absolute Mary ” Bonus Disc CD – it is indeed a challenge to give this Legendary! Jerry Garcia release, the proper praise it deserves – Amazing!!! Also included here in this ” Complete ” Legion of Mary Vol. 1 & Absolute Mary Bonus Disc CD 3-CD Set – is the Ultra-Rare! 1 2-CD Set way back in 2005, and musically… It is simply Amazing! This 1-CD Bonus Disc offers 73+ minutes of unreleased material!!! Not only is this Bonus Disc CD quite possibly the most rare & evasive Jerry Garcia’ Bonus Disc CD’, but it also may very-well be the best – in terms of musical quantity & musicianship quality. Both this CD and the ” Way After Midnight ” Bonus Disc CD, are without question – top-shelf… Mostly depending on you ear’s ” taste for era “. This Disc kicks off with a jammed-out 17:40 minute’ Boogie On Reggae Woman’ (by Stevie Wonder), and is then followed by one of the rarest (& most eloquent) Jerry Garcia pro-releases of all-time! >>>’ Every Word You Say’!! This track is then followed by a nearly 11-minute’ Legion of Mary’ Jam’! Then, a completely blistering-hot’ It’s No Use’ starts off the 2nd half of this Disc clocking in once again at nearly 11 minutes. By this point, the crystalline tones Garcia is getting out of his Fender-Twin should have you blown back on your easy chair – or at least that’s exactly what this did for me. You are treated to one of the most-vicious Garcia fret-board attacks that has ever been pro-released in the form of a mind-blowing 14 minute’ The Wicked Messenger’ – by Dylan!!!! This Garcia deliver is nothing but sheer passion & power!! This one will definitely send chills up & down your spine! It is hard for me to even really put into typed-words just how hard Jerry goes after the jam-pockets on this particular Rare! Version – this definitely falls into the Must! Hear for yourself category – without any question. And then last – but by all means not-least… And after this, it’s your cue to get up off your easy chair sorry! And hit that play button again to start it all over. This one is just that good, my fellow Garcia Fans. In fact, it would be very easy to consider this complete Treasure! – and, one of if not ” the ” finest Garcia releases to date. Here, it is of course of the utmost importance to give a Massive! Shout-out to the 1977 Colgate University Student Body! Because believe it or not – they were indeed! Successful in making the Good Ol’ Grateful Dead right in their’77 Prime! The’ Official’ Colgate University ” Dance Band ” for their’77 Homecoming Weekend!!! The Colgate Raiders managing to convince the power-that-be or were in’77! To actually allow the Grateful Dead… And obviously, the Grateful Dead Touring Fan Faithful! To descend, or in some cases – even Land! From places elsewhere & likely from 11/2/1977 Toronto! On the Colgate University Campus… The Proud Home of the Colgate University Raiders!!! And, as far as on 11/4/77 goes… The Proud Home of a Rippin’!!! 77 Dead Show – Live & In-Action!!!!! So yes, all of you other’ Student Bodies’ out there have quite a bit to live up to… To be just like, and as Cool! As the Colgate U. Class Of’77 was — able to draw the Grateful Dead for their School Homecoming Dance! Oh my goodness, as where do I even contemplate-beginning to start with this one? ! ? A Grateful Dead Prime Era? A New York region High-Energy Show? Tape of Myself & Many! Just 2-Days before 11/6/1977 Binghamton?? I guess I could just stop there, right? As there is just too-much G. On this very-very Hot! Hey, I mean you wanted a Dance… Being’77 Fall, and all… The Band is just Silky-Smooth! – just like you’d well expect, but all throughout this Show – song-by-song… The little extra Umphhhs!! And seriously, it happens to the point – where it looks like they are personally challenging themselves as a collective unit to leave no vocal or jam-pocket stone unturned!! Little vocal-extras, treble-twangs & accents in the’ right’ spots, backing vocals, rhythm playing – from the Guitar, Keys & Bass! Do our Heroes sound great here — and, I can’t help but saying it (again, as usual)… But, Garcia’s Vocals specifically – just sound Exceptional!!! There is tone-bliss all over the place & Everywhere! All throughout both of these 11/4/77 Sets… And, saying up front that Phil’s little ” Jones Gang ” thing is totally fun & funny…- but, after that salute… It just gets tough — Really-Tough! To pick personal favorites from this Show? ! ? Well, for me, I’d have to say that the Let It Grow! – the Iko > Stella! Are probably my personal ” Noteworthys ” from this fluid, tight & Stellar! If your aren’t already’ in the know’ – well, this wasn’t the longest Dead Show ever… Though still way-up-there in’ Quality’ – But! It even actually fits entirely on the 1st Two (2) Discs on this 3-CD Set! So, that means that You! Are indeed treated to a 3rd CD Surprise!!! Is indeed the’ Show-Before’!!! 1st & 2nd Set hand-picked selections from the also Legendary’77 Tour 11/2/1977 Seneca College Field House Show – in Toronto, Ontario!!! A Show with not only tip-top Beautiful! 77 tempo versions of T. & Ramble On Rose from Set I… But also one of’ The’ Exploratory! Versions of Scarlet > Fire!!!!! And, a Terrapin Station too – that offers all of the’77 build-up that you might expect… Almost approaching its 1st Birthday! Wow, and what a G. Year to be born-in! Billed at the time & commonly referred to as the ” From Egypt with Love ” Shows – this release captures the Band during a 5-night ” Homecoming ” from the Amazing! This was a fine chance & occasion for the band members to collectively spread the magic that they experienced on that Monumental Journey. From a personal standpoint, this is one (if not’ the’) Road Trips I was most excited to receive when I heard it would be released way-back in 2008. Over the years, I’m just one of the numerous! Numbers of loyal Dead Fans that have given the analog tapes from this run a serious’ workout’. The news that significant highlights from this run would be available in a digitally-remastered / pro-release format was a true cause for celebration!! Clearly one of the Finest’78 runs of Shows delivered by the Band, as there are abundant Musical Treasures! All-throughout this 3-CD set. Not only beautiful & well-played tunes from this ” Era ” like Passenger, Stagger Lee, and Miracle — but also historic ” Special-Treat ” versions the likes of Scarlet > Fire – and the blistering-hot I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’ > Other One! It should be proudly-noted that Garcia puts a muscle-style workout on his MXR Distortion + pedal during the Other One ascension, that might even make Jimmy Page or Tony Iommi raise an eyebrow. And one of the 1st glimpses of what would become an early taste of hot & heavy good-nights in The 80’s! When Jerry would eventually convert to primarily Boss distortion equipment OD-1 / HM-2 – etc. There are many moments on this release that border/equal music perfection – at least to my humble Grateful Dead ears. This is without question a Must-Hear & Must-Have, in my opinion. And as far as the ” Bonus Disc “… The He’s Gone will just make your spine tingle, and Had the World to Give? !! Well, here indeed is my own super-short personal story on this-one : I was listening to this song on my 10/17/78 analog tape (through head-phones) at just before midnight on 8/8/95. After the tune, I hung’em up, turned off the tape-deck and went to bed. The next morning she called me letting me know that Jerry had passed. So, even though it can sometimes be a bit tough to hear for me… I’m all the more grateful to own this legendary live-track in pristine A + quality.
