When Tolkien’s revolutionary’The Hobbit’ arrived on bookshelves in 1937, it redefined fantasy and introduced the genre to a new audience. Some consider it to have been the Harry Potter of the time. With the success of the first printing, the publishers decided to incur the costs of printing color illustrations in the second printing which Tolkien produced himself. The text of the first edition was also changed by the second edition to align with the story of The Lord of the Rings, soon to be published. The popularity was so great that his publisher requested a new series and thus The Lord of the Rings came about. Book binding tight and square with clean, unmarked original full bound feaux leather boards and slipcase. Internally clean, bright and unmarked with crisp text. The Hobbit 1937 first edition 1st Impression by J R R Tolkien

Rare The Hobbit – 1st edition – 1st Impression by J R R Tolkien. For sale is a charming first edition, first impression of J R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, a book which has become increasingly scare to find in any condition. One of only 1488 printed in 1937, this is the book which gave birth to modern fantasy fiction, and at time of listing this is the only copy of the true first edition offered for sale worldwide. The book itself is a solid honest copy. There is a small stain on the spine of the book, apart from this the boards present well in their original pale green colour. Internally the book is a nice clean example, without any of the usual foxing which accompanies this book. There is a neat contemporary gift inscription on the ffep and a corresponding book plate of the previous owner, a Daphne Maberly. All of the plates are present, and one has been lovingly and delicately painted in watercolour as shown in the photograph. The binding is good on the book. Around page 210 there is a beginnings of a split but no cracks and no exposed guttering or netting. Apologies for the poor photo quality. We will update photos as soon as possible. The book also comes with a facsimile dust jacket to protect it on it’s further travels!
