Grateful Dead Fall Tour’71 Show in Forth Worth, Texas!!! The Good Ol’ Grateful Dead! Gun Slinging’ in the Big-State!! – 1971 Fall Tour! The Grateful Dead and the whole traveling circus descending on the Big-State! Well-over Forty-Five (45) Years Ago! Right smack dab in Dallas / Fort Worth at T. None the less – just a couple of years after the local Folks probably heard about that’ Woodstock’ thing! ?? This must have been a Completely-Awesome! To attend – and I’m so psyched for you Fans out there that were able to catch this Very-Magical Dead Show! I will say one thing for certain… The Band is downright Gun-Slinging! The Songs, Ballads & Cowboy Tune! Are attacked with vigor – and the Improvisational Psychedelic! Moments are pushed to the Absolute-Max!! As many of you may, or may not already know this’ Other One > Me & My Uncle > Other One!!! Puts you right back in the saddle yourself through your head-phones – naturally… So incredibly clean (transitionally) & dynamic! And, even though Donna Jean Godchaux was the one who actually approached Jerry Garcia herself – to ask him to let Keith Godchaux in the Band as the new Keys player… Keith’s playing is totally delightful at this stage – and this once again asks the question if Garcia ever came even close to making an imperfect-move when it came to staffing-up the line up of the Band during every different Grateful Dead time & era? Addition to the Band – indeed. When listening to this release for the very 1st time as strangely I never owned the analog cassettes? Even more then just thinking about Don’t Mess With Texas! I kept finding myself thinking & feeling Don’t Mess With The Gool Ol’ Grateful Dead!! They no-doubt deliver the Fiery! Goods here – just into their 6th Year as a Band together during this Brilliant!! (9-Tracks) from 5/26/93 & 5/27/93 — Including Picasso > Fire, Gloria, the Legendary!!! Cassidy > Uncle Johns Band > Cassidy!!! Grateful Dead Road Trips Cal Expo’93 3-CD Set — 2-CD Set + 1-CD Bonus Disc! — 1993 Summer Tour Grateful Dead at Expo… I mean let’s see here my fellow Dead Fans, as I do kindly warn you that I run the risk of getting a little’ emotional’ over this one, this Very-Hot Dead Run!!! All I can say is I hope that you were able to catch a Show or Shows! 93 Cal Expo run. I was so fortunate to not only warm up at the Shoreline run prior, but also catch all-three of these Incredible Nights! Of Historic Live Grateful Dead!! Two thoughts here — 1st thought : Many critical fans are less-fond of 90’s (post-Brent) Dead and obviously there are some good reasons for feeling that way – especially from the’ consistency’ standpoint, and at times the apparent lack of energy & even the achievement of a grippy musical tone. And then the 2nd thought : During this May 1993 Cal Expo Shows there was a very-very! Special brew’ stirred up for these California Rex Foundation Shows, as follows : A song-by-song Jerry Garcia Guitar-Clinic! + When Phil’s On The Band’s On! + When Things Get Weir’d! = what many Deadhead’s consider the Band’s last Great! I don’t personally feel quite that way myself i. Autzen’93/’94 – Oakland Feb. 94 Chinese New Year of the Dog! , and I’m sure a few’ big’ others — however, if you were there for this Beyond-Glorious! May’93 run at Expo – I can see exactly why you feel that way, and I completely understand. An absolutely Perfect atmosphere : California Sunshine, a Rex Benefit occasion, the Band clearly feeling the great vibes throughout, all in probably the last small (and most intimate) outdoor venue the Grateful Dead were still able to play in this’90’s era due to crowd sizes, associated problems, and etc.. You’ve gotta love the old Cal Expo, just gotta… But here’s the scoop, and who will ever know why exactly this happened except for each of the Boys, naturally – I’d assume. : Jerry Garcia was simply ready-to-go All!!! Throughout this entire Expo’93 Rex run – Big-Time!!! He comes out of gates, guns Rosebud! Blazing & Phil immediately follows suit as lead (bass) guitarist — then Bob Weir at his best (looking like he’d been anxiously waiting for this moment). Garcia’s fret board / picking attack & tone is aggressive, vicious & pristine all throughout the power-moments in this run, and the ballads are heartfelt, sweet & played with excellence. Shakedown Street clearly proclaims that Sacto & Expo! Do most definitely have some serious Heart! I mean look out Jerry-freaks because here indeed comes the Boss Turbo-Overdrive! That you all live-for!! A killer Playing In The Band version & set-placement(s) – with reprise included! I mean Here Comes Sunshine… Picasso Moon > Fire on the Mountain? !! I mean look out below in the Phil Zone!!! Last but not least, one of the most creative, improvisational & crystal-clean transitions ever – of all-time! Cassidy > Uncle John’s Band > Cassidy!!!! But most-definitely not least.. G. L. O. R. Gee, Lll, Ooo, Rrrrr,, IiiiiIIII, Aaaa!!!!! I mean I truly challenge the Purist Fans of 60’s, 70’s & 80’s Dead, to give this Mid-90’s Good Ol’ Grateful Dead an open-minded try! No guarantees naturally, but I really do think you’ll be very-pleasantly surprised. Some actually speak of the 5/26 Show as being the true last great’ Hurrah’ point for the Grateful Dead, and me – myself — well, I personally feel the entire 5/27/93 Show was one of the Best Shows I ever saw. Right up there on the same level as some of the scorching-hot nights with Brent in the Late 80’s/Early 90’s. I bet that this is the latest release the Grateful Dead will ever professional re-master & release for the loyal fans, and there are some real reasons why they picked this one — and it is All! Right-here in the Music!! Definitely – Most-Definitely — Enjoy!!! The nothing-short of Legendary!!! A very-rare opportunity indeed to acquire to this groundbreaking Jerry Garcia – Legion of Mary release! In Entirety (3-CD’s)!!! For a little bit of my personal-take on this amazing 1974-75 Legion of Mary band, in addition to some vital details on the ” Absolute Mary ” Bonus Disc CD – which is an Essential! Rare-Treasure for any Jerry Garcia Fan… Legion of Mary, what a fantastic band during it’s way too short-lived mid-70’s time! This project was rooted not only in Jerry Garcia’s love for music, and increasing desire to focus on additional solo (non-Grateful Dead) projects – but probably even more importantly, his close friendship & musical brotherhood with talented keyboardist Merl Saunders. Project blossomed during an interesting era for Garcia, as the Grateful Dead had just played their potentially final ” Farewell Shows ” in October of 1974. As a result, Jerry’s addiction to playing music, and playing it live resulted in immediately staffing up a great solo-project band. From an electric-music standpoint, if the Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Band beginning in 1972 was technically the 1st form of the ” Jerry Garcia Band “, then this 5-man Quintet was certainly the 2nd. It would in fact be the inaugural (non-Grateful Dead) electric Quintet that Jerry Garcia had staffed-up. Outside of this’74-’75 Legion of Mary band, and the ” Reconstruction ” project in’79 to follow – Garcia was always the clear-cut leader of the band (especially in the ” Jerry Garcia Band ” from 1976-95). But, what you have here is Jerry being more a ” part ” of a great well-rounded band – and power that structure allows, truly results in the Amazing! The songs that they deliver are both originals, in addition to multiple historic cover song versions that stand on their own regardless of who is playing them. It is however their unique and almost uncanny ability to make this material their’own’ – purely due to their sheer respect, passion, and fondness for playing it live to others in the audience who love hearing it just the same. You get hints of Dylan – Chuck Berry – Stevie Wonder – Lightnin’ Hopkins – Smokey Robinson – Hank Ballard – Jimmy Cliff – The Band, you name it – and this brilliant unit could even impress those who wrote these songs, with their thoughtful & inspiring deliveries. It is indeed safe to say that this Legion of Mary era was indeed short, but sweet. And, as for this Quintessential! Jerry Garcia ” Absolute Mary ” Bonus Disc CD – it is indeed a challenge to give this Legendary! Jerry Garcia release, the proper praise it deserves – Amazing!!! Also included here in this ” Complete ” Legion of Mary Vol. 1 & Absolute Mary Bonus Disc CD 3-CD Set – is the Ultra-Rare! 1 2-CD Set way back in 2005, and musically… It is simply Amazing! This 1-CD Bonus Disc offers 73+ minutes of unreleased material!!! Not only is this Bonus Disc CD quite possibly the most rare & evasive Jerry Garcia’ Bonus Disc CD’, but it also may very-well be the best – in terms of musical quantity & musicianship quality. Both this CD and the ” Way After Midnight ” Bonus Disc CD, are without question – top-shelf… Mostly depending on you ear’s ” taste for era “. This Disc kicks off with a jammed-out 17:40 minute’ Boogie On Reggae Woman’ (by Stevie Wonder), and is then followed by one of the rarest (& most eloquent) Jerry Garcia pro-releases of all-time! >>>’ Every Word You Say’!! This track is then followed by a nearly 11-minute’ Legion of Mary’ Jam’! Then, a completely blistering-hot’ It’s No Use’ starts off the 2nd half of this Disc clocking in once again at nearly 11 minutes. By this point, the crystalline tones Garcia is getting out of his Fender-Twin should have you blown back on your easy chair – or at least that’s exactly what this did for me. You are treated to one of the most-vicious Garcia fret-board attacks that has ever been pro-released in the form of a mind-blowing 14 minute’ The Wicked Messenger’ – by Dylan!!!! This Garcia deliver is nothing but sheer passion & power!! This one will definitely send chills up & down your spine! It is hard for me to even really put into typed-words just how hard Jerry goes after the jam-pockets on this particular Rare! Version – this definitely falls into the Must! Hear for yourself category – without any question. And then last – but by all means not-least… And after this, it’s your cue to get up off your easy chair sorry! Twenty-Three (23) Previously-Unissued Grateful Dead’ Live’ Tracks! From the Egypt 1978 Shows!! – at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco, CA!! On 10/17/78 – 10/21/78 & 10/22/78!!! ” From Egypt with Love “!!! Billed at the time & commonly referred to as the ” From Egypt with Love ” Shows – this release captures the Band during a 5-night ” Homecoming ” from the Amazing! Experience of playing 3-nights in front of the Pyramids & Sphinx at the Gizah Sound & Light Theater in Cairo, Egypt!!! This was a fine chance & occasion for the band members to collectively spread the magic that they experienced on that Monumental Journey. As it also stands, this would be one of the final runs / stands of the Grateful Dead playing the Fan (& Band) favorite Winterland Arena on their Bay Area home-turf. This 23-track release Complete! – with Very-Rare’ Bonus Disc CD’ included! – and is one of the Very-Finest! Road Trips Series releases. There is clearly Love in the Air! , and the synergy between the Fans & the Band is captured beautifully in this audio-mix. From a personal standpoint, this is one (if not’ the’) Road Trips I was most excited to receive when I heard it would be released way-back in 2008. Over the years, I’m just one of the numerous! Numbers of loyal Dead Fans that have given the analog tapes from this run a serious’ workout’. The news that significant highlights from this run would be available in a digitally-remastered / pro-release format was a true cause for celebration!! Clearly one of the Finest’78 runs of Shows delivered by the Band, as there are abundant Musical Treasures! All-throughout this 3-CD set. Not only beautiful & well-played tunes from this ” Era ” like Passenger, Stagger Lee, and Miracle — but also historic ” Special-Treat ” versions the likes of Scarlet > Fire – and the blistering-hot I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’ > Other One! It should be proudly-noted that Garcia puts a muscle-style workout on his MXR Distortion + pedal during the Other One ascension, that might even make Jimmy Page or Tony Iommi raise an eyebrow. And one of the 1st glimpses of what would become an early taste of hot & heavy good-nights in The 80’s! When Jerry would eventually convert to primarily Boss distortion equipment OD-1 / HM-2 – etc. There are many moments on this release that border/equal music perfection – at least to my humble Grateful Dead ears. This is without question a Must-Hear & Must-Have, in my opinion. And as far as the ” Bonus Disc “… The He’s Gone will just make your spine tingle, and Had the World to Give? !! Well, here indeed is my own super-short personal story on this-one : I was listening to this song on my 10/17/78 analog tape (through head-phones) at just before midnight on 8/8/95. After the tune, I hung’em up, turned off the tape-deck and went to bed. The next morning she called me letting me know that Jerry had passed. So, even though it can sometimes be a bit tough to hear for me… I’m all the more grateful to own this legendary live-track in pristine A + quality.
