To attend – and I’m so psyched for you Fans out there that were able to catch this Very-Magical Dead Show! I will say one thing for certain… The Band is downright Gun-Slinging! The Songs, Ballads & Cowboy Tune! Are attacked with vigor – and the Improvisational Psychedelic! Moments are pushed to the Absolute-Max!! As many of you may, or may not already know this’ Other One > Me & My Uncle > Other One!!! Puts you right back in the saddle yourself through your head-phones – naturally… So incredibly clean (transitionally) & dynamic! And, even though Donna Jean Godchaux was the one who actually approached Jerry Garcia herself – to ask him to let Keith Godchaux in the Band as the new Keys player… Keith’s playing is totally delightful at this stage – and this once again asks the question if Garcia ever came even close to making an imperfect-move when it came to staffing-up the line up of the Band during every different Grateful Dead time & era? Addition to the Band – indeed. When listening to this release for the very 1st time as strangely I never owned the analog cassettes? Even more then just thinking about Don’t Mess With Texas! I kept finding myself thinking & feeling Don’t Mess With The Gool Ol’ Grateful Dead!! They no-doubt deliver the Fiery! Goods here – just into their 6th Year as a Band together during this Brilliant!! Grateful Dead Road Trips Cal Expo’93 3-CD Set — 2-CD Set + 1-CD Bonus Disc! — 1993 Summer Tour Grateful Dead at Expo… I mean let’s see here my fellow Dead Fans, as I do kindly warn you that I run the risk of getting a little’ emotional’ over this one, this Very-Hot Dead Run!!! All I can say is I hope that you were able to catch a Show or Shows! 93 Cal Expo run. I was so fortunate to not only warm up at the Shoreline run prior, but also catch all-three of these Incredible Nights! Of Historic Live Grateful Dead!! Two thoughts here — 1st thought : Many critical fans are less-fond of 90’s (post-Brent) Dead and obviously there are some good reasons for feeling that way – especially from the’ consistency’ standpoint, and at times the apparent lack of energy & even the achievement of a grippy musical tone. And then the 2nd thought : During this May 1993 Cal Expo Shows there was a very-very! Special brew’ stirred up for these California Rex Foundation Shows, as follows : A song-by-song Jerry Garcia Guitar-Clinic! + When Phil’s On The Band’s On! + When Things Get Weir’d! = what many Deadhead’s consider the Band’s last Great! I don’t personally feel quite that way myself i. Autzen’93/’94 – Oakland Feb. 94 Chinese New Year of the Dog! , and I’m sure a few’ big’ others — however, if you were there for this Beyond-Glorious! May’93 run at Expo – I can see exactly why you feel that way, and I completely understand. An absolutely Perfect atmosphere : California Sunshine, a Rex Benefit occasion, the Band clearly feeling the great vibes throughout, all in probably the last small (and most intimate) outdoor venue the Grateful Dead were still able to play in this’90’s era due to crowd sizes, associated problems, and etc.. You’ve gotta love the old Cal Expo, just gotta… But here’s the scoop, and who will ever know why exactly this happened except for each of the Boys, naturally – I’d assume. : Jerry Garcia was simply ready-to-go All!!! Throughout this entire Expo’93 Rex run – Big-Time!!! He comes out of gates, guns Rosebud! Blazing & Phil immediately follows suit as lead (bass) guitarist — then Bob Weir at his best (looking like he’d been anxiously waiting for this moment). Garcia’s fret board / picking attack & tone is aggressive, vicious & pristine all throughout the power-moments in this run, and the ballads are heartfelt, sweet & played with excellence. Shakedown Street clearly proclaims that Sacto & Expo! Do most definitely have some serious Heart! I mean look out Jerry-freaks because here indeed comes the Boss Turbo-Overdrive! That you all live-for!! A killer Playing In The Band version & set-placement(s) – with reprise included! I mean Here Comes Sunshine… Picasso Moon > Fire on the Mountain? !! I mean look out below in the Phil Zone!!! Last but not least, one of the most creative, improvisational & crystal-clean transitions ever – of all-time! Cassidy > Uncle John’s Band > Cassidy!!!! But most-definitely not least.. G. L. O. R. Gee, Lll, Ooo, Rrrrr,, IiiiiIIII, Aaaa!!!!! I mean I truly challenge the Purist Fans of 60’s, 70’s & 80’s Dead, to give this Mid-90’s Good Ol’ Grateful Dead an open-minded try! No guarantees naturally, but I really do think you’ll be very-pleasantly surprised. Some actually speak of the 5/26 Show as being the true last great’ Hurrah’ point for the Grateful Dead, and me – myself — well, I personally feel the entire 5/27/93 Show was one of the Best Shows I ever saw. Right up there on the same level as some of the scorching-hot nights with Brent in the Late 80’s/Early 90’s. I bet that this is the latest release the Grateful Dead will ever professional re-master & release for the loyal fans, and there are some real reasons why they picked this one — and it is All! Out Of Print – Extremely-Rare!! Exclusive Pre / Early Order’ Only’! ” which accompanied the ” Rockin’ The Rhein 2004 release — Amazing! Oh my ” Good Ol’ Grateful Dead “!!! It is pretty tough to put into’ words’ just how incredibly awesome this Extremely-Rare! 1-CD ” Bonus Disc ” is… But I’ll certainly try my very-best. First off, if you are a serious fan of Pre-Hiatus (1974) Grateful Dead, then you absolutely! Need to hear this release – a complete no brainer – and, if you collect ” only the best ” in G. Releases — then yes, you most definitely need this one!! I hope you already have it, as it is without question one of the most difficult ” Bonus Discs ” to acquire of all-time… And it is definitely beyond evasive. Most likely because it’s just that good, and also I suppose because it was released close to a Decade & a Half Ago! (in 2004) – and most Dead Fans are likely completely-reluctant to let this one go from their cherished music collections. Just think this >>>’72 Veneta, Oregon! Basically (without’ totally’ spoiling the soup for you), this March’72 release from the Academy of Music in New York City offers 6-Tracks Playing In The Band – Sugar Magnolia > Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) > Jam > Uncle John’s Band & Dark Star! , and the Band comes straight out of the gate swinging & way-ready to Rock! The Playing In The Band is the 1st selection, and it is pretty much the victim though… Victim, in a Grate-way! Of a no-holds-barred Jerry Garcia electric-assault with some of the meanest Colorsound Wah live action that you can imagine! And yes, I know – you can’ imagine’ quite a bit! As so can I. But no-kidding at all here, as it is right about here that Phil starts to pound away at high-volume rhythm perfection, and the drum-stick action begins to be spot on! At this point you are like yep… They are in ” The Zone “!!! This Sugar Mag is rip-roaring and I won’t even say when, in an effort to not spoil it for you – but a little later on this disc, Garcia toys-around with what I think we could’ almost’ consider a near Sugar Mag’ re-entry’ – though it gets called off in a subtle fashion by some deeper & spacier jamming. Simply some must-hear live G. On this moment of Magic! Then, Pigpen straight-out muscles this’ Caution’, and as we well-know – this was some of his last ” Best ” on U. Soil – though, in Europe he did still manage to bring the very best he could. The’ Jam’ on here is played with integrated passion & power – and, heads beautifully! Into Uncle John’s Band before finishing up with a mesmerizing Dark Star!!! I mean how can one really go wrong with this 6-track 73+ minute’72 G. Without any question, this is one of the very best top-shelf! ” Bonus Disc CD ” G. And, considering that it takes place inside the U. In March 1972 as a ” warm-up ” for the Twenty-Two (22) Europe’72 stops which followed — the Fan-demand for this one makes way-more than good sense. The Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Dream Bowl!! Dark Star > Cryptical > Other One > Cryptical… 69 ” Prime Era ” Live-Dead!!!! Offered here is the ” 1969 ” CD Set from inside the Legendary! Grateful Dead ” 30 Trips Around The Sun ” Box Set – released in 2015 in direct conjunction with the much anticipated 50-Years! Celebration of The Grateful Dead (1965 – 2015)… And, to honor this Landmark! Rock & Roll Achievement – Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino released a Limited Edition Box Set (of 6,500 units) – to rightfully’ Commemorate’ “’65 “! And in unprecedented & So-Cool! This Monster Box Set included Thirty (30) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty (30) CD Sets (80-CD’s in total) – and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band’s 30-Year development… From 1966 to 1995! Obviously, this was a ” Deadheads Dream ” type Box Set – for the Beyond-Special occasion… Of 50-Years Upon Our Heads! Fantastic, to say the least… And, for the 30 Trips ” 1969 ” 2-CD Set selection offered here… ” at the ” Dream Bowl!!! Call’ from inside’ The Vault!!! The Two (2)’69 Dream Bowl Shows were both! Serious Dead Fan ” Life-Changers ” for any Good Deadhead worth their weight in’ Dead-Tape s’ way-back in the Late-’80’s/Early’90’s Era – which, as I recall was right around the time that they first surfaced… Or, you know – at least to my own knowledge. And that was the time for sure, that they first started circulating around my taping circle of Dead Fan Friends! The Band played 2-Huge!! Shows at the Good Ol’ ” Dream Bowl ” on 2/21/69 & 2/22/69 – and as I recall (quite-well)… The 2/21/69 Show got a little more’ hype’ by Tapers & Tape Collectors – for two main reasons… 1st being the Massive! Dark Star – and the 2nd being… The overall’ quality’ of the two nights of tape, in comparison. This is really the initial reason why I feel this 2/22/69 release call is a Solid! Because really, what happens here – is it genuinely puts this 2/22/69 Show on the same top-shelf as the 2/21/69 Show. The 2/21/69 Show got Big-Time! Props because of it’s ” Dark Star “, mainly – as I remember some even putting it up there towards the 2/13/70 Dark Star scale. With this 2/22/69 pro-release now officially being unleashed? ! – and when you also add the Pigpen Fired & Fueled’ Lovelight’? ! ? With all seriousness – it might even take a tiny’ lead’ if you really listen to the cohesive & creative nature of what’ surrounds’ this Dark Star! Firstly, Dark Star comes out of an impressive (& really’ noteworthy’) Mountains Of The Moon highlighted by flawlessly-played & excellently-recorded Acoustic finger-picking by Jerry! – which, in this case indeed helps even more… As this Dark Star is initially given it’s newest life. And, more directly to the point… The Cryptical Envelopment’ following’ Dark Star and birthing the Other One – is simply Amazing! And, that’s not even it… As the Other One then re-enters Cryptical leading up to one of the Hottest! Death Don’t Have No Mercy versions of all of 1969! — this ” Death Don’t ” is Up-There!! I know, this is a tall order for sure – but, it’s really-really’ there’ in the Garcia’69 Hot-Zone! Out of Doin’ That Rag comes another! Stephen > Eleven Jam! > Lovelight that the Band pretty much ever-played. I know, an even taller order obviously… , but the only way really to confirm this claim is with the Headphones!! And, I must openly admit… When I saw that ” Dream Bowl ” was indeed going to grace the highly-competitive ” 1969 ” spot in this 30-Trips Box? – I just assumed that it was the 2/21/69 Show, in my initial glance. And then, once reading the fine-print duh… I saw that it wasn’t 2/21/69… And it actually-was 2/22/69? !! So, bummed for a split second – I just decided to instantly revert back to an’ open-mind’… And, let me tell you – I’m so incredibly Grateful! I hadn’t listened to either of these Shows for close to maybe 3-years? – prior to finding out what would be released inside 30-Trips. And, it was a great call to go about it that way, for me. Honestly, as in my own personal opinion… The’ Mastering’ job done on this set is one that is not only’ noteworthy’ – but, it’s even worth some kind of Award! Maybe even like a Christmas Story type’ Major-Award! Garcia’s grip on the frets has some serious edge – attitude – attack – both consistently & constantly! All-throughout this 2/22/69 Show – with that distinct Gibby’ Raunch! With the only really-minor flubs barely audible when he is really-really-Attacking! In say Page-like fashion – with all of his might, heart & soul. If there is a time to take a little bit of borderline-slop in Rock & Roll – I mean that is right where you want it… In wheelhouse, or maybe better said – in the ” Dream Bowl ” Boiler Room!! It should be appropriately noted too, that fret-wise? Is on one serious mission throughout this entire 2/22/69 Vallejo Show! – just like he also was on 2/21/69! I mean I don’t know? I guess the 1969 Grateful Dead were just Real-Psyched! On the Dream Bowl!!! Just how many People are still left with us here today that were fortunate enough to see This-One! With that being a Massive! Live-Dead’69 Life Accomplishment. I sure wish I was there, and I hope You-Were! – some nothing short of’ Breathtaking!
