Spring Tour’77 Live-Dead!! Installment of Grateful Dead ” 1977 ” Live Rock & Roll History – in a bottle!!! – and this time… Taking place at the 1977 Colgate University’ Red Raiders’ Homecoming Dance!!!!! 77 Fall Tour – Live-Dead!!! Yes indeed, as it has indeed arrived – and just about 37-Years after it 1st went down Live! With cream of the crop Digital Sound!! Certainly nothing’ unreleasable’ about these Reels… Three shouts out to the lack! Of Ravages-of-Time, with this Audio Beauty! But, before we start talking G. Here, it is of course of the utmost importance to give a Massive! Shout-out to the 1977 Colgate University Student Body! Because believe it or not – they were indeed! Successful in making the Good Ol’ Grateful Dead right in their’77 Prime! The’ Official’ Colgate University ” Dance Band ” for their’77 Homecoming Weekend!!! The Colgate Raiders managing to convince the power-that-be or were in’77! To actually allow the Grateful Dead… And obviously, the Grateful Dead Touring Fan Faithful! To descend, or in some cases – even Land! From places elsewhere & likely from 11/2/1977 Toronto! On the Colgate University Campus… The Proud Home of the Colgate University Raiders!!! And, as far as on 11/4/77 goes… The Proud Home of a Rippin’!!! 77 Dead Show – Live & In-Action!!!!! So yes, all of you other’ Student Bodies’ out there have quite a bit to live up to… To be just like, and as Cool! As the Colgate U. Class Of’77 was — able to draw the Grateful Dead for their School Homecoming Dance! Oh my goodness, as where do I even contemplate-beginning to start with this one? ! ? A Grateful Dead Prime Era? A New York region High-Energy Show? Tape of Myself & Many! Just 2-Days before 11/6/1977 Binghamton?? I guess I could just stop there, right? As there is just too-much G. On this very-very Hot! Hey, I mean you wanted a Dance… Being’77 Fall, and all… The Band is just Silky-Smooth! – just like you’d well expect, but all throughout this Show – song-by-song… The little extra Umphhhs!! And seriously, it happens to the point – where it looks like they are personally challenging themselves as a collective unit to leave no vocal or jam-pocket stone unturned!! Little vocal-extras, treble-twangs & accents in the’ right’ spots, backing vocals, rhythm playing – from the Guitar, Keys & Bass! Do our Heroes sound great here — and, I can’t help but saying it (again, as usual)… But, Garcia’s Vocals specifically – just sound Exceptional!!! There is tone-bliss all over the place & Everywhere! All throughout both of these 11/4/77 Sets… And, saying up front that Phil’s little ” Jones Gang ” thing is totally fun & funny…- but, after that salute… It just gets tough — Really-Tough! To pick personal favorites from this Show? ! ? Well, for me, I’d have to say that the Let It Grow! – the Iko > Stella! Are probably my personal ” Noteworthys ” from this fluid, tight & Stellar! If your aren’t already’ in the know’ – well, this wasn’t the longest Dead Show ever… Though still way-up-there in’ Quality’ – But! It even actually fits entirely on the 1st Two (2) Discs on this 3-CD Set! So, that means that You! Are indeed treated to a 3rd CD Surprise!!! Is indeed the’ Show-Before’!!! 1st & 2nd Set hand-picked selections from the also Legendary’77 Tour 11/2/1977 Seneca College Field House Show – in Toronto, Ontario!!! A Show with not only tip-top Beautiful! 77 tempo versions of T. & Ramble On Rose from Set I… But also one of’ The’ Exploratory! Versions of Scarlet > Fire!!!!! And, a Terrapin Station too – that offers all of the’77 build-up that you might expect… Almost approaching its 1st Birthday! Wow, and what a G. Year to be born-in! When I first caught word that word that this’77 Seneca / Toronto Show was going to be the little… Or, as I should say – the Huge!!! Extra – I was sure psyched. Made my Dead Fan day… And as if 11/4/77 just isn’t enough by itself! ? ! So here indeed is the conclusion that I’ve’ very-quickly’ made — 11/4/77 + 11/2/77 = Dead Fan Must Have! Now, just go & imagine that. TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead recorded’ Live’ at Colgate University Wesley M. Albuquerque Civic Auditorium – Albuquerque , New Mexico (NM) : November 17, 1971 (11/17/1971) + University of Michigan – Hill Auditorium – Ann Arbor, Michigan (MI) – December 14, 1971 (12/14/1971) : Complete! 4 CD Set – with Dave’s Picks 2018 Bonus Disc CD included! 2018 (1971/2018) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Limited Edition’ Individually-Numbered’ CD Set (of # 18000) : The Very-Rare! ” Bonus Disc ” 4-CD Set! ” Dave’s Picks 26 ” 1971! 11/17/71 Albuquerque, New Mexico! Dead Show’ Ever’ in New Mexico!! – in addition to the Legendary! 12/14/71 University of Michigan! Show at’ Hill Auditorium’!! A 1971 Grateful Dead Fan ” Dream-Set ” release! Live-Dead stands from the Attack-Heavy! 71 Fall / Winter Tour!!! If you didn’t consider Late-1971 G. A ” Prime / Peak ” Era ever-before? Well, you Very-Likely Will! ” With (12/14/71 NM) & Without (11/17/71 NM) Pigpen ” – All in One’71 Live-Dead Set! – with the Keith-Fresh! & Slightly-New-Look & Sound! 1971 Fall / Winter Tour LIVE-DEAD!!! – and just like Pigpen himself used to so well say… It’s All You Need!! After giving this ” Dave’s Picks 26 ” a deeply-attentive Headphones-Only! And, quite frankly – it feels like a re-kindled Love-Affair with’71 Grateful Dead!!! These Shows are just So… I mean, you know -‘ Filthy’ in a… Just the way this Set was done – is just so-so Cool! — 11/17/71 in Albuquerque, New Mexico! (‘ Without’ Pigpen), and then… 12/14/71 at the University of Michigan (‘ With’ Pigpen). So, this really forces you to hear the 1971 Before & After! – or, should I more properly say… The After & Before!! While Pigpen wasn’t with the Band (for the obvious health-related reasons) during the 11/17 New Mexico Show – he then rejoined them by the time the 12/14 U. Of M – Hill Auditorium Show arrives! For really’ Historical’ purpose & Enjoyment! – you get to hear the Rip-Roarin’!! Late-’71 Grateful Dead unit playing ” With & Without ” ” Without & With “! Pigpen all within the Same! As I like to call it myself – the ” Keith-Fresh ” Grateful Dead Era! Or, as I guess you could also call-it the… Because damn, he Sure-Was!! Donna herself actually’ cornered’ Jerry in Early-1971 to ” Tell-Him ” that Keith! Was ” The Man ” – and with Live throw-downs like these? ! Just thinking back here for a second – can you kindly ” Zone-In ” to how the 11/14/71 TCU! & 11/15/71 Austin, TX! Shows made you feel… Way back in like 2010 – when Those! Were cut-loose from The-Vault! – well, here you have it – really… For lack of any really better way of saying it. ” to how Your-Jaw was ” Dropped!! When you listened to Disc 2 of the 11/15 Austin Show? !! Well, better get ready to put Your-Jaw back-down-there… Of this brand of – ahhh… Jerry Garcia Fretboard Assault!!! – with Phil Lesh showing no fear at all to play along… And too, let’s not forget either… And yep, you bet – as a 28-Year Old! Garcia sure doesn’t mind That! More Fields to Plow!!! Seriously, as these are like Fender Strat Guitar Clinics!! – very different, than say a Jimi Clinic! But, in so-many-ways – just Equally-Important! It is like you are Reading! Taking its own Trip!!! It just so-feels like you are part of it – while it also feels like no one can steer it? ! — it’s just Playin’ In the Band!!! And too – let’s keep in mind as well that This! Show right-here is the 1st! ” Grateful Dead Show ” Ever! And, on the flip-side – it’s only something like the ” 10th ” Dead Show in Michigan. But, my point being… That’s a pretty-big difference & especially in 1971! For a San Francisco, California! And, in fact too… The Dead only ever played 5-Show Ever! In New Mexico, with this 11/17/71 Show obviously being the 1st! And, just for fun too – here are the’ only’ others… 10/7/77 U of MN! And 10/17/82, 9/10/83 & 9/11/83 at the Downs of Santa Fe! Caught this November 17, 1971 Albuquerque! Show – then go ahead & I’ll wait… While you ” Pat Yourself On The Back ” – Right-Now!! And, as far as the Hill Auditorium – Ann Arbor Show goes… Just take a second now – and I’ll bet you can… Visualize – The Poster! I mean let’s be serious, after all – as nearly Every! Good Deadhead knows This-One! Cartooney – Crazy – & Killer!! And, as for the ” Sound ” on these?? ! Well, while we’ve all heard the ” Ann Arbor ” Show in some ” Moderately-Decent + Form ” & especially once the DAT Era! But, as for the 11/17 ” Albuquerque ” Show? ! ? Now That-One was just-about Nowhere! I mean I heard it ” Once ” in my whole-life prior to this DP # 26 – and the Sound-Quality on the tape I had? Well, it was like ” 2-Thumbs-Down ” – just one of those For Historical’ Listening’ Purposes – Only! And this Dave’s Picks 26 Version! – is an ” Entirely-Different ” Ball-Of-Wax! ” 1971 ” on these Sets – and reading them… It hardly-even tells you a Thing! – other than things like… Oh Look – they played Run Rudolph Run! Because as pretty-much every Grate! Dead fan well-knows – in This! Era – reading Sets usually does no-good. You’ve just gotta go ” Old School ” – Roll Up Your Sleeves! – Lean Back in Your Easy Chair! – put the Headphones! — It’ll Melt! Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 25 Volume Twenty Five : Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena – Binghamton, New York (NY) – November 6, 1977 (11/6/1977) : 3 CD : 2018 (1977/2018) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Limited Edition’ Individually-Numbered’ Set (of # 18,000) : The 25th! Installment of the Grateful Dead’ Dave’s Picks’ Series 2012 – 2018 & Counting! Grateful Dead 1977 Fall Tour New York Night – at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena – on November 6th, 1977!!! Did’77 Live-Dead Get Any-Better Than’ This! & Does’ Any’ Live-Dead Get Any-Better Than This! Pondering this very-carefully now (for now well-over 30-years)….. I’m personally siding-with……. But, This-One sure doesn’t need any help from me.. The Grateful Dead – Broome Co. Arena – Binghampton, New York – 11/6/77!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, as I just Totally-Love-This. Mental-Notes’ on This Grateful Dead MONSTERSHOW!!! For me personally over the last 30+ Years. And right here & now… I’m going to actually try to ” Explain ” this Show?? ! If I collected all of my tangible & intangible ” notes ” taken down & noted on This-One! Little pieces of scrap paper, tape cover backs, notebooks, trader lists, etc. I’d probably have Over-300!!! Those have pretty much’ scattered’ just about everywhere over the last Three-Decades Plus! As at least for me & Many-Other! Deadheads I’ve Known Since the’80’s! Isn’t just a’ Dead Show’… It’s a Religion! And, if you already know this Show (which, I’m just really-really hoping you already do – simply because life is short) – let’s just put it two’ quick’ ways for starters… And, if you (very-likely) had the same A-/B+ Soundboard Tapes from the Late-’80s / Early’90’s — then yeah… Just common-sense here — This-Show was’ Selected’ as the 25th! Dave’s Picks Series release. So, kinda what I’m saying here… Is that this-means that Dave’s Picks ” 30 “, ” 40 “, 50! Are all pretty-much Screwed! It just really cannot-be-beat. So, you’re going to have to left-turn, right-turn, back-up, or try & move-forward… Because I’m not really sure that 11/6/77 Binghamton!!! Can it be Equaled? – I don’t know, maybe? But, with that said & to me… I just can’t really even go there myself. I mean let’s put it like this… While 1/22/78 MacCourt The Pit! Is my own personal’ Favorite’ Show for yes, many of my own crazy personal Dead Fan reasons… On the flip-side… This 11/6/77 Binghamton Show is the one I personally consider The-Best!!! The Best-Dead-Show from Yes… And too, I’d easily also go as far as saying from the’ Entire’ June 1976 to Winter/Spring 1979 (Post-Hiatus / Keith & Donna Era). And, let me also say – while I wasn’t quite’ always’ there With Grate! Thanks To >>> 11/5/77 Rochester – 10/12/77 Manor Downs – 10/2/77 Portland – 6/9/77 & 6/7/77 Winterland – 5/22/77 Pembroke Pines – 5/19/77 Atlanta – 5/15/77 St. Louis – 5/9/77 Buffalo – and yes, even… 5/8/77 Ithaca – and, maybe even I’ve missed a few here CT & Beantown May’77, etc. But, I think the part about & The Story! On just ” How ” I arrived to this ” Official “’77 Dead’ Conclusion’ of mine here – is even kind of funnier. And, trust me – as it’s a True! I’ll openly admit that the 5/19/77′ Uncle John’s’ itself is personally-responsible for turning me into a Deadhead – when, I was just like a 14 or 15 year old kid. And, when being that Deadhead Kid – I pretty much decided way-early on that ” 1977 ” was’ easily’ my favorite Dead-Year Question… But, is it still Here-Today??? – as I’ll Just Take ” The 5th “!! Cough, cough, 6/30/85, cough… There wasn’t too much’77 that I hadn’t heard by the time I could actually drive. But, when I could finally drive like to Cap Centre & RFK Shows & such with a ” Learner’s Permit ” – Ha! – I was actually driving down to a Cap Centre Show wow… And then – my Buddy R. & I decided This-Claim! Right-here pretty much in full unison… This’77 Binghamton Show might just be The-Best! 1977 Grateful Dead Show? ! And then we so eloquently decided as young-kids asking openly for politically-correct Deadhead forgiveness in advance here – ha! – because I do actually love Donna-Dead overall — You know, if you actually could just trade the’ Sunrise’ here in this 11/6/77 Binghamton Show – for one-of the’ scarce’ 1 of the Only-5! & switch the Set around accurately – to accommodate’ The Dew! Dead Show of 1977!!!!! And from there on out, we always kind of joked about this. Like a 1/2 Decade later – I was doing a crazy-long Oregon > Bay Area East Bay! – and having all of the time in the world to’ Think’ & Listen to 11/6/77 Binghamton! And, it goes just like this >>> You know… You don’t even need-to-lose’ Sunrise’ – and you don’t even need-to-add’ The Dew!!! Grateful Dead Show of 1977!!!!! So yeah – Done & Dusted!!! – at least for me. Like – check it off the list!! And I’m extra-proud of it now too – for sure, being that it is now Officially Dave’s Picks 25! Because our thought on this was originally-born (by us) in like 1988/1989… And’ Finally’ decided-upon (by me) in 1994/1995. As the simple Truth! That the Boys (& Gal) Flat-Out Prove! This claim we’ve made – from the 1/2 Step Mississippi’ Show-Opener’!! Through the Johnny B. This Binghamton Show is not-only Stellar!! – but it is straight-up MEAN!!! This-is a 35-Year Young! Jerry Garcia just playing Out-Of-His-Mind!! In fact, this Show is just So-Nasty!!! That I really hate to say it – but, it probably really could not have happened as a’ West Coast’ Dead Show. As just like 11/5 (Rochester) right before it… There is just Out-Of-This-Universe!!! High-Energy East Coast style New York! And, let’s not forget too… Jerry, Bobby, BK, Phil & Mick were probably still all thinking about The-Other – 5/2/70 Binghamton!!! – yeah, the one which Dick Latvala Himself! Liked to openly refer to as… The Show Of All Shows!!! So, I don’t know Dick… If Binghamton’70 &’77 go head-to-head for 10-Rounds? Does’77 have a Fighting’ Chance’?? I’ll come right-out & say it… >>>>> Scarlet > Fire > Good Lovin’ > St. Stephen > Drums > NFA > Rat > St. But, you know – to each their own… We all know & respect-that always a must… But, at least to me & these humble Dead Fan ears of mine? Grateful Dead : Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena – Binghamton, New York (NY) : November 6, 1977 (11/6/1977). Me & My Uncle. Friend Of The Devil. Dupree’s Diamond Blues. The Music Never Stopped. Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 9 Volume Nine : Harry Adams Field House – University of Montana – Missoula, Montana (MT) : May 14, 1974 (5/14/74) : 3 CD Set : Limited Edition’ Individually-Numbered’ Set (of # 14,000) : 2014 (1974/2014) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Proud Home of the Montana Grizzlies! Recorded’ Live’ on 5/14/74 in Missoula, Montana!!! – to the Proud Home of the Montana Grizzlies!!!!! Grateful Dead Show Ever! – in the Grate! It’s time – yet again to clear some space in that’ Rack’! The CD Rack, that is… And that’s not coming from me – it’s coming from the ” Skeleton Moose “!!! Right on the Front-Cover! Of this’74 Grateful Dead release audio Beauty! And, as you can tell… This Moose definitely means business – but doesn’t necessarily want to use his Rack to do any damage to anyone – or anything… Because It Must Have Been The’ Bitterroots’!!! This Skeleton-Moose is proudly sporting the Montana State Flower! – and I should say Flower(s)!! Because there are lots! Getting ready to do some Dancin’ with the Dancin’ Montana Grizzly Bears! – or so it seems… Just before they all go & do some serious Dancin’ inside the University of Montana Grizzlies Field House!!! – time to Boogie Down to some Mid-’74 G. Is this Cover what the Scene looked like on 5/14/74 in Missoula? ! ? Well then, no wonder this Dead Show was so darn good. Getting after it on this hot-night – just about 45-Years Ago!!! And all of you G. Taping junkies out there (like me)… Now – you Know! What I’m talkin’ about when I refer to the Band chompin’ Hard! At the bit at this Missoula Show… I mean bring me back down from the Moon – why don’tcha… Gettin’ at it for certain – and in the Spaciest! This landing & transition segue into China Doll is just as Sweet as a Bitterroot!!! But wait, are those even Sweet? Not really’ sounding’ that way ha! But this Live-Dead Most-Definitely Is! There is a little ” time-keeping ” fun right off the bat – before the Bertha opener – delivered by B. And you can tell right away that Billy knows he’s Out-West!!! It’s quite clear that he’s gonna put on his Cowboy Hat and push the Boys hard! But, it’s one of those nights when they don’t need it – because they’ve All! Got the same plan up their collective-sleeves… I mean everybody elbows – jives & musically-instigates – until this thing is flat-out Cookin’!!! It’s like a game of Deadhead-Dominoes tonight! And you bet the Skeleton-Moose is diggin’ that! I mean either Keith is a touch loud in the mix / remaster? – or he is just completely Drivin’!! Phil is flat-out Pounding! – with the Scarlet!! – being the proof right inside the Bitterroot! Bobby Weir has got both volume & attack at his! Thing going – where he is almost band-leading by bopping everyone when they need a good musical boppin’ – nudge – or push! Pre-hiatus Purists – if you don’t have this one – you need it! The interplay is clean – near-flawless – inviting – and seems to always leave a clear canvas – for the next guy who is feelin’ it to Paint! And, just like I Always! When Jerry’s Wearin’ Jeans… It’s Fine By Me!!! Yep, I’m darn proud of coining that one… As I did it like over 30 years ago – while listening to Freedom Hall’74 – as then I had the Vision! Garcia is scary-good – in not only his chops alone, but in the obvious fashion that you never know where he’s going – but, when he does it… You’ll already be there in the Music-Mind! But, as usual – this guy is always two-steps – or many more ahead. This is such a creative period for Garcia… I mean it’s not the most vicious – mean & nastiest stuff i. Somewhere between’81 &’90 the stuff that I Live-for! On the frets – tones – of the Boss!! – but, the creative element of’ what’s comin’ next’ is just pure-excitement… And, especially in the loose & Spacey-Zones! ” And, on that topic of ” Zones — well, this release Must! Be acquired by all Phil Lovers! Not just because he’s on the mark! Musically & pounding-away, but… Because there is a ridiculously!!! Close-up photo of him in the Liner Notes… I’ve seen some Phil-Photos in my days… But this one is Killer! Phil it up in 1974! – that’s what I say. And, one final note – there is a little paragraph segment inside these Liner Notes, from the local May’74 Missoula Newspaper – that reviewed this Show… And, at least to me – it’s a Complete-Classic! >>> First, it follows a little bit of rap – about the Wall Of Sound! And then this >>> But, the musicians were the important ingredient, and Garcia is one of the best musicians there is. He nonchalantly stood onstage, bracing himself on one leg as the other rose and fell with the tempo of the music. Garcia was at his peak in the Dead’s half-hour’ Playing In The Band’ jam, when he took a foray into rock, jazz and finally an electric neverness that left the crowd spellbound. Well fellow Fans, that was said by Steve Shirley back in’74 – after coming down from This! Show – well, then again… Maybe he never did come down from it? Anyone whoever saw Garcia in that’ Zone’ live – in one form or another – one venue / city or another – or at any place or Space! I mean do you really ever forget it? So, here we have it… Yet, another’ Must-Have’ G. Grateful Dead Dave's Picks 8 Volume Eight Fox Theatre Atlanta GA 11/30/1980 3 CD
Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 8 Volume Eight : Fox Theatre – Atlanta Georgia (GA) – November 30, 1980 (11/30/1980) : 3 CD : 2013 (1980/2013) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Limited Edition Individually-Numbered Set (of # 13000) : Very Rare!! Of’80’s Grateful Dead!! Delivered by the Limited Edition (of # 13,000) ” Dave’s Picks ” Series… Straight from the Fox Theatre! – on the 1980 G. Now we are Talkin’, right? Three Cheers for’80’s G. Is the ballpark that this fan just-loves to play in. And this’ Pick’ – I must admit… It caught me a bit by surprise! Considering that a few of the recent releases in this now 2-Year Young Series! Were along the lines of the must-have / no-brainer category in a good way, naturally… Examples being the’77 Mosque – Richmond,’74 Hartford – CT,’76 William & Mary – VA,’73 UCLA – CA, and’78 Normal – IL. Random to many, but… In a very-very good way. I actually tracked this’ group’ of Shows down from this Fall/Winter run decades ago, because both the logistics & circumstances were very-interesting – and usually in the world of Live Grateful Dead? When there is’ Strange’, and/or’ Interesting’… There is often Fire!!! And with this run – it is totally the case. Keep in mind, that this was really a 4-Show Tour in November’80 – right through the Southland, and it all happened exclusively in Florida & Georgia – with this 11/30/80 Show being the only performance that was non-Florida! Considering what the Band did down there in that region – specifically in 1977, and even’73,’85,’88 &’89 as well? !! Point being, this is exactly-why I tracked these down, way-back in the day… You know, just ” Searchin’ For The Sound “!!! And on this November’80 run – they were indeed! Finding that Good’Ol Groove – but, in a’ Go To Heaven’ infused & power-packed way. Delightful’ New’ Grateful Dead! This string of Shows followed Eight (8)! Shows at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC, where as you well know – the Band delivered both Electric & Acoustic sets, really – for the 1st big time since 1970! When you play guitar, no matter who you are – generally, when you switch back & forth from Electric & Acoustic… It is the Acoustic that keeps your hands both honest, and strong. Switch back to Electric – and your chomps are tight & have room to fly! You can feel that in this run, without question… That five letter word that every Deadhead loves >>> Tight!!!!! The 11/26/80 Show was in Pembroke Pines, FL, the 11/28/80 Show was in Lakeland, FL, the 11/29/80 was at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL – at Alligator Alley! And then the’ Tour Closer’? – in Atlanta, Georgia!!! A pretty place, with solid acoustic sound in the room… To put it plainly, this is one of those’ types’ of beautiful & rustic venues – with some serious History! – that as a musician… It just makes you want to Deliver! While you & your crew are on stage, doing your thing. And the Grateful Dead on this November’80 night? Set I sends a clear message, that this is a night that will do more than just count – right out of the gate with a hot, slinky & groovy! Feel Like a Stranger!! Then Loser, Cassidy & Ramble On – with Garcia meaning business! And next – a Little Red Rooster that might even have Mick Jagger himself, tip his Devil’s Cap to the Grateful Dead! Team Bobby & Jerry!! Then – – – the 1st’ Electric’ Bird Song since 1973 gets unleashed!!! And soon after, the’80’s set staple gets played close to perfection – in Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance… Into, you guessed it – a gritty rough & tumble Deal!!! To close the Set. And for Set II? Well, a few moments in here do indeed border on not just Classic – but near-Legendary moments… Specifically, in the Scarlet > Fire! Right straight of the gate. In fact, the’ transition’ – with Phil’s attack! Has always been a focal-point among fans in my days, as they collectively get-after this one, hammer-down style! There is cat & mouse everywhere – and at times it even sounds like the mouse might have even gotten the cat!! ? ! However, no counting the chips at this point – as a big-league Samson! To deliver – you bet… A’ Sunday Sermon’ for Hot-lanta! Pretty darn hot too… Then, just shortly around the corner – it’s more G. The main ten gets toggled, and the five-finger count? ! A nothing short of Massive! Bobby Weir-charged Playing In The Band, which is beyond note-worthy, and is truly a candidate for the’ Playin” of the’80 Year! – right up there with 5/11/80 – 9/2/80 – 6/21/80 – 9/6/80 – 12/13/80, at least to the ears of this humble Dead Fan. Into Drums & Space! The Wheel > Around & Around > Johnny B. Goode to close it up for the night… Chuck Berry style!! And, to finish & make certain that all Fan & Band too Smiles!! And Uncle John’s Band Encore! Which has a slight-tinge of the same exact beauty as the Legendary! 5/17/1977 Uncle John’s played at the Fox, just 3 1/2 years prior. This is a 3-CD Set to treasure, not only in the contents – but in the decision-making of the sound, balance, channel-separation, etc. In the re-mastering process. Yes, as here we again have a complete G. Let’s keep the fingers collectively-crossed for a some more of this’80’s G. See, you give a fan a little – and they want a lot… Hey, it’s in our blood… What can we say. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 32 Volume Thirty Two : August 7, 1982 (8/7/1982) – Alpine Valley Music Theatre – East Troy, Wisconsin (WI) : 2004 (1982/2004) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. Printing (GDCD 4832) – Not the Real Gone’ Re-issue’! 3 CD : Out of Print! Fall Tour’82 Show at Alpine Valley by The Grateful Dead! Early-’80’s G. Cylinders — All Systems Go!!!! This is the Very-Rare Original! Grateful Dead Productions 1st Printing of this Dick’s Picks #32 release – from 2004!!! It is Not the 2011 Real Gone Reprinting / Re-Issue! Deadheads, I cannot tell a lie — as this may in fact be my favorite Dick’s Picks (definitely’ one-of-them’), and it’s from the Early-80’s!!! ? ! But hey, that makes perfect-sense… If you catch the Boys on the ” right-night ” – where things are running on all-cylinders, and naturally… When Garcia is ridiculously Red Hot!!! Fellow fans, if you are not already in the know on this one? Then let me tell you – this 8/7/82 at Alpine Valley was indeed the ” Right-Night ” – and then some… As this Show is a complete Mind-Blower! – at least to my humble Dead Fan ears. And yes, very self-admitted – I live for my “’80’s Dead “. The fact is, and the analog cassettes out there have the living proof – when the band comes to really-play in’79 through’90? You had just really strap-on the seat belt… Because you’re delightfully headed to the Moon! – on many of nights, and totally-willingly, right? The Grateful Dead to Planet Earth! From’81 to’86, and in’89-’90. Sure, this set is only two (2) CD’s and was sourced from Cassette Masters – which I personally just Love!! And I’m not saying that it can really fight fairly with say a Dick’s Pick #3, #4, #8, #29, etc. I mean you get the picture, right? But all I’m saying is when it comes to this wonderful Dick Latvala Series… Well, this is the set that I cannot help but reach for. Set II is a flat out burner, and Garcia is straight-up Lightning!!! The funny thing is that the real’ Fanfare’ on this one is the Music > Sugaree > Music!!! – which is neat, tight & way-cool. But let me share two vital words with you, and you’ll never forget them with this set… The Band is on sheer Fire!!! Live Energy & Summertime at Alpine! At its highest with precise & crystal-clean playing. A fantastic recording-captured in its full-essence, and originally spun on Analog Cassette! The 1st (of only 2) Music > Sugaree > Music. Who saw both of these?? I hope lots of you, as I only caught the 2nd one at 7/3/94 at ” The Dump ” the ” beloved ” dump, that is… Way back in’94! But seriously, this China > Rider will really take you for a ride, as Jerry delivers 5 or 6 ” Magnificent ” different lead-themes throughout the transition – more than usual in this era, and with a fresh-creativity that only the Master-himself could even think to deliver! ? ! And look out for the Playin” sandwich’ into Dew! Too, cause it’ll getcha!! This one, and the 8/28/82 Veneta are the two that I have always liked to burn my speakers with – during this noteworthy hot-streak period in mid-’82. As far as Set 2 goes? Well, after the China > Rider, they could have walked off – Grand-Slam style, if they had wanted – but instead… And trust me, the roof at Alpine is likely still! Feeling the after-effects of this earth-shaker of a Dew! Then, call it a night for this Amazing! This one is the Real-Deal, and all the Thanks! Is owed to Dick on this Pick… As we just don’t really get these’ risky’ picks anymore, and me myself – I live for them… Just bring it – Live Rock’n Roll! At it’s very-best to my ear… The kind that is rewarded, when big risks & gambles are taken on stage. When it works well? Or, near perfect – in fact? Then you get 8/7/82 – Alpine! Much less just being there for this one… Just think how it felt for the Band to play-it!! ? !! Of Live-Dead some 40-years ago? ! ? – when all the Stars, Planets, and just really everything-else aligned too. This Grateful Dead Treasure!!!
