Grateful Dead Dave's Picks 8 Volume Eight Fox Theatre Atlanta GA 11/30/1980 3 CD
Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 8 Volume Eight : Fox Theatre – Atlanta Georgia (GA) – November 30, 1980 (11/30/1980) : 3 CD : 2013 (1980/2013) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Limited Edition Individually-Numbered Set (of # 13000) : Very Rare!! Of’80’s Grateful Dead!! Delivered by the Limited Edition (of # 13,000) ” Dave’s Picks ” Series… Straight from the Fox Theatre! – on the 1980 G. Now we are Talkin’, right? Three Cheers for’80’s G. Is the ballpark that this fan just-loves to play in. And this’ Pick’ – I must admit… It caught me a bit by surprise! Considering that a few of the recent releases in this now 2-Year Young Series! Were along the lines of the must-have / no-brainer category in a good way, naturally… Examples being the’77 Mosque – Richmond,’74 Hartford – CT,’76 William & Mary – VA,’73 UCLA – CA, and’78 Normal – IL. Random to many, but… In a very-very good way. I actually tracked this’ group’ of Shows down from this Fall/Winter run decades ago, because both the logistics & circumstances were very-interesting – and usually in the world of Live Grateful Dead? When there is’ Strange’, and/or’ Interesting’… There is often Fire!!! And with this run – it is totally the case. Keep in mind, that this was really a 4-Show Tour in November’80 – right through the Southland, and it all happened exclusively in Florida & Georgia – with this 11/30/80 Show being the only performance that was non-Florida! Considering what the Band did down there in that region – specifically in 1977, and even’73,’85,’88 &’89 as well? !! Point being, this is exactly-why I tracked these down, way-back in the day… You know, just ” Searchin’ For The Sound “!!! And on this November’80 run – they were indeed! Finding that Good’Ol Groove – but, in a’ Go To Heaven’ infused & power-packed way. Delightful’ New’ Grateful Dead! This string of Shows followed Eight (8)! Shows at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC, where as you well know – the Band delivered both Electric & Acoustic sets, really – for the 1st big time since 1970! When you play guitar, no matter who you are – generally, when you switch back & forth from Electric & Acoustic… It is the Acoustic that keeps your hands both honest, and strong. Switch back to Electric – and your chomps are tight & have room to fly! You can feel that in this run, without question… That five letter word that every Deadhead loves >>> Tight!!!!! The 11/26/80 Show was in Pembroke Pines, FL, the 11/28/80 Show was in Lakeland, FL, the 11/29/80 was at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL – at Alligator Alley! And then the’ Tour Closer’? – in Atlanta, Georgia!!! A pretty place, with solid acoustic sound in the room… To put it plainly, this is one of those’ types’ of beautiful & rustic venues – with some serious History! – that as a musician… It just makes you want to Deliver! While you & your crew are on stage, doing your thing. And the Grateful Dead on this November’80 night? Set I sends a clear message, that this is a night that will do more than just count – right out of the gate with a hot, slinky & groovy! Feel Like a Stranger!! Then Loser, Cassidy & Ramble On – with Garcia meaning business! And next – a Little Red Rooster that might even have Mick Jagger himself, tip his Devil’s Cap to the Grateful Dead! Team Bobby & Jerry!! Then – – – the 1st’ Electric’ Bird Song since 1973 gets unleashed!!! And soon after, the’80’s set staple gets played close to perfection – in Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance… Into, you guessed it – a gritty rough & tumble Deal!!! To close the Set. And for Set II? Well, a few moments in here do indeed border on not just Classic – but near-Legendary moments… Specifically, in the Scarlet > Fire! Right straight of the gate. In fact, the’ transition’ – with Phil’s attack! Has always been a focal-point among fans in my days, as they collectively get-after this one, hammer-down style! There is cat & mouse everywhere – and at times it even sounds like the mouse might have even gotten the cat!! ? ! However, no counting the chips at this point – as a big-league Samson! To deliver – you bet… A’ Sunday Sermon’ for Hot-lanta! Pretty darn hot too… Then, just shortly around the corner – it’s more G. The main ten gets toggled, and the five-finger count? ! A nothing short of Massive! Bobby Weir-charged Playing In The Band, which is beyond note-worthy, and is truly a candidate for the’ Playin” of the’80 Year! – right up there with 5/11/80 – 9/2/80 – 6/21/80 – 9/6/80 – 12/13/80, at least to the ears of this humble Dead Fan. Into Drums & Space! The Wheel > Around & Around > Johnny B. Goode to close it up for the night… Chuck Berry style!! And, to finish & make certain that all Fan & Band too Smiles!! And Uncle John’s Band Encore! Which has a slight-tinge of the same exact beauty as the Legendary! 5/17/1977 Uncle John’s played at the Fox, just 3 1/2 years prior. This is a 3-CD Set to treasure, not only in the contents – but in the decision-making of the sound, balance, channel-separation, etc. In the re-mastering process. Yes, as here we again have a complete G. Let’s keep the fingers collectively-crossed for a some more of this’80’s G. See, you give a fan a little – and they want a lot… Hey, it’s in our blood… What can we say. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 32 Volume Thirty Two : August 7, 1982 (8/7/1982) – Alpine Valley Music Theatre – East Troy, Wisconsin (WI) : 2004 (1982/2004) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. Printing (GDCD 4832) – Not the Real Gone’ Re-issue’! 3 CD : Out of Print! Fall Tour’82 Show at Alpine Valley by The Grateful Dead! Early-’80’s G. Cylinders — All Systems Go!!!! This is the Very-Rare Original! Grateful Dead Productions 1st Printing of this Dick’s Picks #32 release – from 2004!!! It is Not the 2011 Real Gone Reprinting / Re-Issue! Deadheads, I cannot tell a lie — as this may in fact be my favorite Dick’s Picks (definitely’ one-of-them’), and it’s from the Early-80’s!!! ? ! But hey, that makes perfect-sense… If you catch the Boys on the ” right-night ” – where things are running on all-cylinders, and naturally… When Garcia is ridiculously Red Hot!!! Fellow fans, if you are not already in the know on this one? Then let me tell you – this 8/7/82 at Alpine Valley was indeed the ” Right-Night ” – and then some… As this Show is a complete Mind-Blower! – at least to my humble Dead Fan ears. And yes, very self-admitted – I live for my “’80’s Dead “. The fact is, and the analog cassettes out there have the living proof – when the band comes to really-play in’79 through’90? You had just really strap-on the seat belt… Because you’re delightfully headed to the Moon! – on many of nights, and totally-willingly, right? The Grateful Dead to Planet Earth! From’81 to’86, and in’89-’90. Sure, this set is only two (2) CD’s and was sourced from Cassette Masters – which I personally just Love!! And I’m not saying that it can really fight fairly with say a Dick’s Pick #3, #4, #8, #29, etc. I mean you get the picture, right? But all I’m saying is when it comes to this wonderful Dick Latvala Series… Well, this is the set that I cannot help but reach for. Set II is a flat out burner, and Garcia is straight-up Lightning!!! The funny thing is that the real’ Fanfare’ on this one is the Music > Sugaree > Music!!! – which is neat, tight & way-cool. But let me share two vital words with you, and you’ll never forget them with this set… The Band is on sheer Fire!!! Live Energy & Summertime at Alpine! At its highest with precise & crystal-clean playing. A fantastic recording-captured in its full-essence, and originally spun on Analog Cassette! The 1st (of only 2) Music > Sugaree > Music. Who saw both of these?? I hope lots of you, as I only caught the 2nd one at 7/3/94 at ” The Dump ” the ” beloved ” dump, that is… Way back in’94! But seriously, this China > Rider will really take you for a ride, as Jerry delivers 5 or 6 ” Magnificent ” different lead-themes throughout the transition – more than usual in this era, and with a fresh-creativity that only the Master-himself could even think to deliver! ? ! And look out for the Playin” sandwich’ into Dew! Too, cause it’ll getcha!! This one, and the 8/28/82 Veneta are the two that I have always liked to burn my speakers with – during this noteworthy hot-streak period in mid-’82. As far as Set 2 goes? Well, after the China > Rider, they could have walked off – Grand-Slam style, if they had wanted – but instead… And trust me, the roof at Alpine is likely still! Feeling the after-effects of this earth-shaker of a Dew! Then, call it a night for this Amazing! This one is the Real-Deal, and all the Thanks! Is owed to Dick on this Pick… As we just don’t really get these’ risky’ picks anymore, and me myself – I live for them… Just bring it – Live Rock’n Roll! At it’s very-best to my ear… The kind that is rewarded, when big risks & gambles are taken on stage. When it works well? Or, near perfect – in fact? Then you get 8/7/82 – Alpine! Much less just being there for this one… Just think how it felt for the Band to play-it!! ? !! Of Live-Dead some 40-years ago? ! ? – when all the Stars, Planets, and just really everything-else aligned too. This Grateful Dead Treasure!!! Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 18 Volume Eighteen : Orpheum Theatre – San Francisco, California (CA) : July 16 & 17, 1976 (7/16/1976 – 7/17/1976) : 3 CD : Limited Edition’ Individually-Numbered’ Set (of # 16,500) : 2016 (1976/2016) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) :’76 Summer Tour! Post-Hiatus’ Grateful Dead Return! To the Bay Area at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre – on the 1976 Summer Tour!!! In the Brand New! Grateful Dead Live Era!!!! I mean just simply do your Historical Calendar and even Dead Base math! On this one, and you will quickly-know just exactly where Your! Right on top of the Home Turf! Of the Good Ol’ New! Grateful Dead – on July 16 & 17, 1976 – at San Francisco’s Beautiful! On the’76 Summer Tour – just shortly-after their Mid-’70’s group ” Hiatus “. And so-ready to Rock & Roll!!! To the Gateway of yet Another! Era period — 1976 > 1977!!! To deliver Live Rock & Roll – in a brand new, and arguably even ” new & improved ” Live G. Some Fans even prefer’76 to’77, as most of the main points tend to deal with a little more’ freshness’ – set lists a little bit less settled into – and, for lack of a better way to’ say’ it… Just a tad more up-tempo’ pop’ &’ punch’ attack of the beats throughout 2nd Sets, and’ especially’ through 1st Sets. And though’77 might definitely have’76 one-upped on the ” Silky-Smooth “, it also might have it a bit more on the Disco-Dead side… But, down to sheer personal opinion – it’s just splitting hairs, and getting down to the real nitty gritty. Personally, I wouldn’t all together ” trade “’76 for’77 – but… There are indeed a number of’76 Shows that do crack the’77 ” Top-25 ” List with ease. And, fortunately for us today – well-over 40-Years! Live-action has been Finally! Let out of the Vault!! — and, I’m most certainly glad to stand behind the fact that this-run is indeed one of the few & the proud’77 ” Top 25 ” crackers. Both the Boston & S. Orpheum Shows got so-much ” tape trader ” circulation time – back in the’80’s &’90’s Era… Simply because not only are these Shows so stand-out – but, also because better & better Soundboard copies continues to trickle down. All the way until the Mid/Late-’90’s Era – where I personally finally found the copies that I considered The-Bomb! So, needless to say – I was all eyebrows-up when I saw that this one was going to come down the pro-release circuit pipeline in this Limited Edition 3-CD format… With the first question I asked myself being — Wow… And now just how? Are they going to make these Shows Tapes! What makes me the Happiest of all here – is that this question was so-solidly answered, and then some. With action from both! 7/16/76 & 7/17/76 freshly in your Music Collection arsenal – you can now even consider giving’ staple’ like releases a momentary peaceful rest such as… Cow Palace’76 – Spirit Of’76 – Dick’s Picks 33 – Dave’s Picks 4 – etc. Orpheum Shows are Absolutely… And Everyone is completely spot-on, with you-know-who Jerry. Never even coming close to missing an up-beat, down-beat, while just consistently surfing the horizon-edge of every single attack-spot & jam-pocket like a surfer on a tidal wave. It should also be noted that where you might think there are some timing mis-communications, or musical flubs, basically… From a pure & simple lack of playing together (lately) in the holistic ” Rhythm ” of the Drums-meets-Base-meets-Bobby Guitar – there is really nothing ” off ” at all – and any musician worth their weight in Rock & Roll will tell you straight-up… That’ ain’t’ easy. Hands-down one of the most important Grateful Dead releases here of the Post ” Hiatus ” Era 1974 – 1976 (roughly) – without any question… And coming right to You! – through your headphones, into your ears – and completely-deeply straight into your Mind & Soul… Or, as I should probably more-appropriately say — channeled right-into your’ Dead-Head’!!! Comes A Time > Drums > Other One! > Space > Eyes > Other One!! > GDTRFB > Sat. Being there just must have been something-else for those fortunate enough to be inside these Summer’76 SF Orpheum Shows… And, just as usual – I’m still waiting for all of these silly repairs on that Good Ol’ Grateful Dead ” Time-Machine “! — Give me the Keys… & I’ll Drive! – 7/16/76 & 7/17/76 S. Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 9 Volume Nine : Harry Adams Field House – University of Montana – Missoula, Montana (MT) : May 14, 1974 (5/14/74) : 3 CD Set : Limited Edition’ Individually-Numbered’ Set (of # 14,000) : 2014 (1974/2014) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : Proud Home of the Montana Grizzlies! Recorded’ Live’ on 5/14/74 in Missoula, Montana!!! – to the Proud Home of the Montana Grizzlies!!!!! Grateful Dead Show Ever! – in the Grate! It’s time – yet again to clear some space in that’ Rack’! The CD Rack, that is… And that’s not coming from me – it’s coming from the ” Skeleton Moose “!!! Right on the Front-Cover! Of this’74 Grateful Dead release audio Beauty! And, as you can tell… This Moose definitely means business – but doesn’t necessarily want to use his Rack to do any damage to anyone – or anything… Because It Must Have Been The’ Bitterroots’!!! This Skeleton-Moose is proudly sporting the Montana State Flower! – and I should say Flower(s)!! Because there are lots! Getting ready to do some Dancin’ with the Dancin’ Montana Grizzly Bears! – or so it seems… Just before they all go & do some serious Dancin’ inside the University of Montana Grizzlies Field House!!! – time to Boogie Down to some Mid-’74 G. Is this Cover what the Scene looked like on 5/14/74 in Missoula? ! ? Well then, no wonder this Dead Show was so darn good. Getting after it on this hot-night – just about 45-Years Ago!!! And all of you G. Taping junkies out there (like me)… Now – you Know! What I’m talkin’ about when I refer to the Band chompin’ Hard! At the bit at this Missoula Show… I mean bring me back down from the Moon – why don’tcha… Gettin’ at it for certain – and in the Spaciest! This landing & transition segue into China Doll is just as Sweet as a Bitterroot!!! But wait, are those even Sweet? Not really’ sounding’ that way ha! But this Live-Dead Most-Definitely Is! There is a little ” time-keeping ” fun right off the bat – before the Bertha opener – delivered by B. And you can tell right away that Billy knows he’s Out-West!!! It’s quite clear that he’s gonna put on his Cowboy Hat and push the Boys hard! But, it’s one of those nights when they don’t need it – because they’ve All! Got the same plan up their collective-sleeves… I mean everybody elbows – jives & musically-instigates – until this thing is flat-out Cookin’!!! It’s like a game of Deadhead-Dominoes tonight! And you bet the Skeleton-Moose is diggin’ that! I mean either Keith is a touch loud in the mix / remaster? – or he is just completely Drivin’!! Phil is flat-out Pounding! – with the Scarlet!! – being the proof right inside the Bitterroot! Bobby Weir has got both volume & attack at his! Thing going – where he is almost band-leading by bopping everyone when they need a good musical boppin’ – nudge – or push! Pre-hiatus Purists – if you don’t have this one – you need it! The interplay is clean – near-flawless – inviting – and seems to always leave a clear canvas – for the next guy who is feelin’ it to Paint! And, just like I Always! When Jerry’s Wearin’ Jeans… It’s Fine By Me!!! Yep, I’m darn proud of coining that one… As I did it like over 30 years ago – while listening to Freedom Hall’74 – as then I had the Vision! Garcia is scary-good – in not only his chops alone, but in the obvious fashion that you never know where he’s going – but, when he does it… You’ll already be there in the Music-Mind! But, as usual – this guy is always two-steps – or many more ahead. This is such a creative period for Garcia… I mean it’s not the most vicious – mean & nastiest stuff i. Somewhere between’81 &’90 the stuff that I Live-for! On the frets – tones – of the Boss!! – but, the creative element of’ what’s comin’ next’ is just pure-excitement… And, especially in the loose & Spacey-Zones! ” And, on that topic of ” Zones — well, this release Must! Be acquired by all Phil Lovers! Not just because he’s on the mark! Musically & pounding-away, but… Because there is a ridiculously!!! Close-up photo of him in the Liner Notes… I’ve seen some Phil-Photos in my days… But this one is Killer! Phil it up in 1974! – that’s what I say. And, one final note – there is a little paragraph segment inside these Liner Notes, from the local May’74 Missoula Newspaper – that reviewed this Show… And, at least to me – it’s a Complete-Classic! >>> First, it follows a little bit of rap – about the Wall Of Sound! And then this >>> But, the musicians were the important ingredient, and Garcia is one of the best musicians there is. He nonchalantly stood onstage, bracing himself on one leg as the other rose and fell with the tempo of the music. Garcia was at his peak in the Dead’s half-hour’ Playing In The Band’ jam, when he took a foray into rock, jazz and finally an electric neverness that left the crowd spellbound. Well fellow Fans, that was said by Steve Shirley back in’74 – after coming down from This! Show – well, then again… Maybe he never did come down from it? Anyone whoever saw Garcia in that’ Zone’ live – in one form or another – one venue / city or another – or at any place or Space! I mean do you really ever forget it? So, here we have it… Yet, another’ Must-Have’ G. Grateful Dead : Dave’s Picks 13 Volume Thirteen : February 24, 1974 (2/24/1974) – Winterland Arena – San Francisco, California (CA) : 3 CD : 2015 (1974/2015) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) : Limited Edition Individually-Numbered Set (of # 16,500) : Brand New / Factory Sealed! Grateful Dead Shows that Needed! And now – It Has Been!!! At the San Francisco Winterland Arena!!!!! When you wish upon a Dark! Sometimes it-does come True!!! And as for this Dead Fan here – this was a darn-near Necessary! Pre-Hiatus (1974) release that just had-to be’ unleashed’ from that so-very precious G. And now, it has Been!! I mean I’m not sure what to even say here about this Historically-Significant! Show – that hasn’t already been said by someone or heard! – at least at some point… Over the last close to 45-Years! ? !! As the Music at this’74 Dead Show – does way-more then indeed speak for itself! The China > Rider – Playin’ – Cumberland – Weather Report Suite > Row Jimmy! – Sugar Mag > NFA > GDTRFB > NFA… And last but most-definitely not least — the Dark Star!!! Noteworthy versions that are truly’ up-there’ in the best of the best conversations in all of Grateful Dead History! If you haven’t ever heard this Show? Wow, as by all means – do-you-ever Need To!! So, as all of that speaks for itself completely… , this is what I can say about this 2/24/74 Show – in regard to the audio-quality – and the accessibility standpoint – from the history of the G. Taping’ &’ Trading’ years. This was a Show that was widely-accessible in the 1980’s – and likely prior to that too – and, the sound quality was always just not quite there – on so-many of the versions that I personally encountered. Point being – once you could lasso this Show in the B+ / A- S. Range – you pretty much just considered yourself lucky – and would need to swiftly move on. I know myself – because I spent years & years trading around for this one – though all of my go-to G. And – it was like almost knowing that you would be soon headed back to square-one! But then, in the Mid-’90’s? ! Changed – and for, the Very-Best! As this 2/24/74 Show was one of the widely trading & extremely-accessible Pre-Hiatus G. Shows from the origin of the ” DAT ” Era!!! I mean let me put it this way… I got my hands on an Completely-Amazing!!! Version of this Show – Complete! On 300 DAT tape – right around 1996 / 1997 as I very clearly remember – and from that point on… In fact, I even at one point’ transferred’ this DAT version to Analog! – just, so I could listen to it through a Nak! I mean hey, I could use the JBL’s either way – but this was a good recipe to undergo… Transferring Digital – to Analog! And then sure, all of your Dead Fan Friends would make fun of you, since DAT was so-cool – in it’s state of the art era. This seriously worked Perfect! And Frankly, this Show is so’ Worthy’ of it’s place in Time & Dead History… That you just can’t have too many copies of it. And, here 2015 rolls around… Digitally-Remastered in Pristine fashion – and completely-Stellar! All across the board. It does sound different though (much) – in the channel separations, levels, mix, etc. To the point that I still! Won’t be parting with my DAT > Analogs! I mean I don’t know what else to say here… So, I’ll just say it like this — Heaven Sent G. See, basically what the Band – and the powers that be are saying to you here is… To listen-to – and’ Own’ this Magical! Early-’74 chunk of Good Ol’ Grateful Dead!!! And, as you’ll see & hear – there are Tons & Tons! Here is – the ” Big-One ” — Dark Star!!!!! So, just remember to strap-on that Cosmic Seatbelt! In your music-listening easy chair – so you’re not’ immediately’ taken Straight! Before the arrival of Disc 3!!!
Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia (GA) on November 30th, 1980 (11/30/1980) : Disc 1. Uncle John’s Band.
